Why do we celebrate Halloween?

Halloween has been around for more than a thousand years and is celebrated on the 31st of October every year, but why? Have a read of our blog post to find out more about Halloween and why it is celebrated.

The tradition originated with the Celtic festival of Samhain. In this festival, people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. However over time, Halloween has evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating lots and lots of treats!

Even though the holiday began in Celtic regions of Ireland, the United Kingdom and France, it quickly spread to the other parts of the world. The idea of trick-or-treating, when kids dress up into children’s halloween costumes became popular in the United States in the early 20th century. Irish and Scottish communities revived the Old World custom of “guising”. This is when a person would dress up in a halloween costume and tell a joke, recite a poem or perform some other trick in exchange for a piece of fruit or other treat. By 1950, trick-or-treating had become one of Halloween’s most popular actives. Today, Halloween is one of the biggest holidays and it is estimated that Brits will sound an extraordinary £320 million on Halloween.
